Permit No. M-77-493 ; Climax Mine
Dear Ms . Winter:
As with the last five years, 1987 continued to be extremely
depressed for the primary molybdenum mining industry. The
Climax Mine continued to follow the down side of this trend
through 1987 .
The Climax Mine began 1987 producing from the underground
operation at a rate of approximately 9500 tons/day which
represented less than 20% of total mine capacity. Manpower
at the beginning of 1987 was 197 . In early March , all
direct production from the mine ceased and manpower was
reduced to approximately fifty full-time personnel . Con-
centrates continued to be shipped from the mine into 1987.
The underground operation was shut completely, but the open
pit , mill and all related facilities were actively main-
tained at a high level of readiness through the remainder
of 1987 ; a situation expected to continue in 1988 . Climax
intends to maintain the mine in this active ready state as
a market "swing producer" with the ability to produce prod-
uct on short notice as the world market dictates .
AFFECTED LANDS
Because of limited production in 1987, affected lands did
not increase during the year. The small amount of tailing
produced during the year was deposited in the Ten Mile
pond, the affected acreage of which did not increase . The
Mayflower tailing pond continued to be used strictly for
water treatment . The McNulty dump did not increase in
acreage during 1987 and is not expected to increase in size
in the near future. Therefore, no additional topsoil was
removed from the toe area of this dump.
