Once the rockfall barrier and mesh drape were completed, the existing wood - framed
canopy structure would be rehabilitated. The mine portal is covered with a 25 -foot x 25-
foot steel and wood lagging structure with a gate. See attached photograph of the Red
Point Mine portal showing approximate height of the existing structure. The structure
remains in fair shape, but some the lagging would need to be replaced with new timbers
to make the entrance secure and to prevent unauthorized access. Any loose rock and
debris on top of the structure would be mucked and the timbers would be covered with
OSB plywood. All of the work described above would be performed by Rock Solid
Solutions, Parachute, CO and would take approximately 15 days to complete.
Other exterior work needed to prepare the mine for re -entry would include removing
loose rock and debris from the side of the road along the mine face to clear the area for
safe parking and equipment staging. Additionally, the existing entrance ramp into the
mine would need to be re- constructed to allow equipment access to the mine. The
entrance portal sits about 8 to 10 feet above the existing road and a ramp would have to
be built to allow equipment to be moved from the road into the mine. The ramp would
be constructed at 15% grade and would be constructed of local material. Equipment used
for this may include a backhoe and/or road grader. Surface grading/ramp construction
would take approximately 7 days to complete.
Proposed Interior Roof Scaling and Bolting
Thyssen Mining would be contracted to refurbish the underground portions of the mine
identified as potential areas for future research activities. This work would include
scaling the mine interior, replacing existing rusted or corroded rock bolts, replacing
matting and cyclone wire, and generally making the mine safe for re- entry. They would
also install a box fan at the top of the ventilation drift in the upper portion of the mine
along with the necessary utilities to complete this work (water, compressed air, and
electrical lines).
The proposed interior mine work would entail scaling the roof and ribs of any loose rock
and ground support to include repairing, replacing, and /or adding roof bolts and wire
netting as needed. Friction bolts and cyclone wire and/or rigid matting would be replaced
and/or installed as necessary up the Main Portal Entry, the 20 Central Entry, the North
Main Access, the South Main Access, the 30 West Entry, the ventilation drift, and in the
20 Gallon Per Ton (GPT) and 30 GPT rooms where future research activities are
expected to take place. See attached Red Point Mine Site Plan for locations.
At the first intersection of the main adit and the main incline, a section of roof is
presently supported by 12 inch square wood posts. This area would be bolted with 25-
foot cable bolts or swellex bolts and appropriate matting or wire. Cable bolts would be
grouted in place. Once the bolting is completed, the wood stulls can be removed to allow
easy access to the 20 gallon per ton (GPT) and 30 GPT rooms where future activities are
expected to take place. Cable bolts would be installed at the center of wide open areas
and at intersection as needed.
