Topsoil, overburden, and gravel will be removed using loaders, dozers, or scrapers in all pits,
establishing a vertical wall along the outer edges of the mined areas.
Prior to any topsoil excavation on site, a 6' high chain link fence will be installed as shown on
Map C -2, which will tie into the existing fences in certain places, to ensure that the public will
not have access to the site. Also, collection ditches and the mine sediment pond will be
constructed in the Pit 1 area prior to topsoil stripping to ensure there is erosion control on the site
from the start of operations.
PIT 1:
Although Pit 1 is shown on Map C -2 to be 21 acres in size, only the southeast corner will
initially be stripped to minimize the amount of topsoil and overburden that need to be stockpiled.
This location is also the lowest gravel floor elevation and will be the location of the sediment
pond once the excavation reaches the bottom of the gravel. Topsoil stripped from the initial 10.8
acre pit will be used to construct a berm creating the visual barrier along the north of the
proposed excavation from the northeast corner of the permit to immediately west of the
Macintosh residence. This is a distance of 1180 feet and will require topsoil of 17,400 cubic
yards to construct it. Using a topsoil thickness of 12 inches, the initial area of excavation
required to attain this volume is 10.8 acres. The Inside slope of the berm will be 2H:1V and the
outside slope varies from 2.5H:1 V to 4H:1 V, as shown on Map C -2. As the operation advances,
additional portions of the berm will be built from the topsoil excavated. The berm will provide a
visual and noise screening of the operations from D 1/2 Road and 32 1 /2 Road, as well as the
residences that exist in these areas. The berm will be constructed to allow irrigation to continue
in the Pit 2 and Pit 3 areas until future mining. All overburden from the stripping of the initial
portion of Pit 1 will be stockpiled on an area south of the existing open drain ditch (33 Road
Drain), and east of future Pit 3. See Map C -2. This volume is approximately 12 feet thick x 10.8
acres, or 209,000 cubic yards. Gravel under this stockpile area was previously mined by others,
has no remaining resource under it, and is ideal for staging and stockpiling activities.
Otter Creek Pit December 12 D -2
