EMPOUNDING WATER. APPROXIMATELY 2800 FEET OF THE CHANNEL <br /> WERE RESTRUCTURED TO KEEP THE WATER TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE <br /> CANYON. THIS DIVERSION FXTFNDS FROM THE RAILROAD, AT ITS <br /> LOWER END, TO A POINT NEAR POND 002 AND ABOVE ANY SURFACE <br /> DISTURBANCES DUE TO MINING. THE DIVERSION CHANNEL HAS A <br /> TRAPEZOIDAL CROSS SECTION 15 FEET WIDE AT THE BASE , 45 FEET <br /> WIDE AT THE TOP, AND 7 FEET DEEP. IT HAS AN AVERAGF SLOPE <br /> OF 1 . I% . AT MAXIMUM FLOW THIS CHANNEL COULD PASS 2,540 <br /> CUBIC FEET OF WATER PER SECOND. IN A STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE <br /> SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE IN FEBRUARY OF 1976, THEY <br /> ESTIMATED THE PEAK FLOW FOR A ONE-HUNDRED YEARS STORM WOULD <br /> BE ON THE ORDER OF 1200 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND OF WATER. THE <br /> CHANNEL WOULD FLOW 4 .8 FFFT DFFP WITH A VELOCITY OF 9.9 FEET <br /> PER SECOND TO PASS THE 1200 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND OF WATER . <br /> MORE FREQUENT AND THEREFORE LESS INTENSE STORMS WILL RESULT <br /> IN MUCH LOWER FLOWS AND VELOCITIES . THE ENTIRE DIVERSION <br /> WAS COMPACTED AND VFGITATED TO MINIMIZE EROSION. THOUGH <br /> SOME EROSION WILL OCCUR INITIALLY , THE BEDROCK LYING JUST <br /> BELOW THE CHANNEL BOTTOM WILL SOON BECOME THE PERMANENT <br /> CHANNEL FLOOR AS IT WAS BEFORE THE DIVERSION. AT THE LOWER <br /> END OF THE CHANNEL THE WATER FLOWS THROUGH A 7-FOOT DIAMETER <br /> CORRIGATED METAL CULVERT AND A 6-FOOT SQUARE CONCRETE BOX <br /> CULVERT UNDER THE RAILROAD WHICH PREDATE ANY MINING <br /> OPERATIONS . AN ADDITIONAL 9-FOOT DIAMETER CORRIGATED METAL <br /> CULVERT WILL BE INSTALLED PARALLEL TO THE EXISTING CULVERTS <br /> TO PASS THE ONE-HUNDRED YEARS STORM. FROM HERE THE WATER <br /> FLOWS TO THE PURGATORIE RIVER THROUGH THE NATURAL CHANNEL . <br /> 4 <br />
