i
j STUDY AREAS
I
The Maxwell Mine encompassed grassland and pinyon-juniper
vegetation types . The grassland type was found on a level plateau
approximately 7200 ft. in elevation. It was characterized mainly by
blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis) , with western wheatgrass (Agropyron
smithii ) , fringed sagebrush (Artemisia frigida) , and other grasses
and forbs interspersed. The grassland type exists on fairly shallow
soils , resulting in greater water runoff and less penetration . Pre-
cipitation is low and infrequent.
The pinyon-juniper type was located on a north to northwest-
facing slope of approximately 7200 ft. elevation with a slope of
/ 17-220. It was characterized by an overstory of pinyon pine (Pinus
edulis) and Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) . Fringed
1 sagebrush (Artemisia fri ida) , millvetch (Astragalus striatus) , and
' numerous other shrubs and forbs constituted the understory. The
pinyon-juniper type occurred on shallow, stony soils with a warm and
relatively dry exposure. The soils were a light brown sandy loam.
The Allen Mine permit area included the Ponderosa pine-Douglas
fir-oak , Ponderosa pine-oak, and .iillow carr vegetation types . The
Ponderosa pine-Douglas fir-oar: vcgeta+ion type ;:as loca' i or a
north-facing slope at 7600 ft. elevation and with a slope of 300 . It
consisted of an overstory of mainly Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)
and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii ) . Other tree species were
pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus
2
