3 <br /> scopulorum) . Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii ) was a major shrub species, <br /> occurring with mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus) and snowberry <br /> (Symphoricarpos oreophilus) . Numerous annual and perennial forbs and <br /> grasses occurred as understory vegetation , including cinquefoil <br /> (Potentilla concinna) , Carex spp. side-oats grama (Bouteloua <br /> curtipendula) , and June-grass (Koeleria cristata) . The soils occur- <br /> ring in this type were a light brown sandy loam. Ponderosa pine, <br /> Douglas fir and Gambel oak were showing good reproduction. Understory <br /> was sparse under the older conifers where there was dense litter. <br /> The Ponderosa pine-oak vegetation type occurred on a north- <br /> facing slope of about 270 with an elevation of 7500 ft. It was charac- <br /> terized by pure stands of Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) interspersed <br /> with patches of Gambel oak ( uercus gambelii ) . Other overstory spe- <br /> cies were pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Rocky Mountain juniper <br /> J (Juniperus scopulorum) . Other shrub species were snowberry <br /> (Symphoricarpos oreophilus) and mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus <br /> montanus) . Understory species consisted of annual and perennial <br /> fortis and grasses such as Carex sp. , Parry oatgrass (Dant_honia parryi ) , <br /> side-oats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) , blue grama (Bout�a <br /> gracilis) , cinquefoil (Potentilla concinna) , star gentian (Swertia <br /> radiata) , and Fendler meadowrue (Thal` fendleri ) . Openings in <br /> P the tree canopy were dominated by Gambel oak and occasional stands <br /> � <br /> of mount in mahogany.
