UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
422 East First St. , Trinidad, CO 81082 6/5/81
Mr. Dave Zeeb
CF&I Mining Dept.
P.O. Box 316
Pueblo, CO 81002
Dear Dave:
Enclosed are soil survey maps, map unit descriptions, and test infor-
mation for samples taken in Apache Canyon, and Maxwell mine.
The soil at the proposed rock dust bin site was determined to be
Prieta loam instead of Noden soil as indicated on the soil map. The
site of the proposed waste dump at the Maxwell mine was also Prieta.
Soil samples of proposed air shaft sites in Apache Canyon were deter-
mined to be Fuera clay loam, and Table Mountain loam. The following
information and test results from the soil samples taken for ph,
SAR, etc.
#1 Rock dust bin site (A - B - Cr profile) Maxwell mine.
Al horizon; loam 0 to 11 inches: Ph = 7.2, SAR = 4.0, EC = 0.9.
B2t horizon; clay loam 11 to 20 inches: ph - 7.4, SAR - 8.0, EC = 1.8.
Cr horizon; hard shale 20 inches.
Recommendation: Separate the surface layer from subsoil because of
the high organic matter content in the A horizon. Both layers are
good growth mediums to establish vegetation and do not have any
hazards other than bedrock at a depth of 20 inches. Soluable salts
are not a problem in this soil. Soil type is Prieta loam.
#2 ?Baste Dump site, Maxwell mine.
Al horizon; clay loam 0-2 inches, ph 7.0, SAR 3.9, EC 0.8.
B2t horizon; clay 2-14 inches, ph 7.4, SAR 4.6, EC 1.2.
C horizon; clay 14-19 inches , ph 7.4, SAR 6.0, EC 1.6.
Cr horizon; hard shale.
Recommendation: A and B horizons should be stockpiled together because
of the thinness of Al and the overall absence of organic matter in the
profile. All three layers are good growth mediums for vegetation with
sufficient water. This soil does not have problems with soluable salts
and ph. Excess fines is the only limitation of this soil . Soil type
is Prieta clay loam.
