/UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
422 East First St. , Trinidad, CO 81082 May 15, 1981
Mr. Dave Zeeb
C F & I Mining Dept.
P.O. Box 316
Pueblo, CO 81002
Dear Mr. Zeeb:
In response to our telephone conservation May 11, 1981, I am enclosing the
following information on the soils tested at the Maxwell and Allen mines.
The soil type at the Allen mine was determined to be Table Mountain loam. _
The soil type at the Maxwell mine was determined to be Noden. These soils
do not have any restrictions of plant growth.
In the previous tests at the Allen mine (4 sample sites) , I stated that the
soil had two horizons that should be stockpiled separately. The A and B
horizons were both high in organic matter and ranged from 20 to 40 inches
thick. They do not require separation. The C horizon was low in organic
matter and slightly calcareous: Both horizons are good growth mediums having
low SAR, Electrical conductivity, and calcium carbonate equivalents. The
A and B horizons are better growth mediums due to the high organic matter
content.
The sample taken at the Maxwell mine had two distinct horizons, A and B,
which need to be separated. The A horizon was high in organic matter, had
a neutral ph, and was low in soluable salts (SAR) . It is an excellent soil
for reestablishing vegetation. The B horizon is slightly alkaline and non-
saline. It does not have the high organic matter content so would not be
quite as good a growth medium. Other than low organic matter content, there
are not any other problems associated with this soil, i.e. , it has low salt
content and low electrical conductivity. With proper fertilization, the C
horizon would be productive with almost any type of -vegetation.
In response to your request for soils information in Apache Canyon, I am
sorry to say that it is not available at this time and cannot be determined
until the later part., of July due to a 6-8 _eek -,;crk de-.ail at Salida I must
.._l.l determine the soil at chat t-;tee. l has been my experience
hovfever, hat the soils in that area, do not have any problems with salt or
carbonates. The only hazards the soils might have are steepness of slope
and shallow depth to bedrock in areas away from the canyon floor.
If you have any questions or need further information please let me know.
Sincerely,
Lee A. Neve
Soil Scientist
