Revised 11/15/81
resources described in Section 2.04 of this application. The mine
development is generally parallel to the Purgatoire River Valley
immediately northeast of the existing main entries developed in the
Maxwell Mine.
Continued development and operation of the Maxwell Mine on the present
mine plan will require additional five-year term permit applications in
the future and throughout the remaining life of the operation. Minor
surface disturbance will be associated with the continued operation of
the mine. This surface disturbance is required to provide areas where
coal processing waste can be placed and areas for ventilation and
escapeways as development progresses away from the main portal area.
These additional surface disturbances will be minor and are required
only for continued production and safe working operation for the mine.
Because the Maxwell Mine will disturb relatively small areas during its
life, and each of these surface disturbances will be utilized throughout
the life of the mine, reclamation will not begin until the mine is being
closed down. The general schedule of reclamation will be carried out
during the last 2 to 3 years of the mine' s operation. Closing of
shafts, slopes, and replacement of topsoil at these outlying locations
will be completed when these facilities are no longer necessary for the
safe and efficient operation of the mine. It is anticipated that
closure of these outlying facilities will be completed with the ultimate
closing of the operation. CF&I Steel Corporation currently estimates
that the Maxwell Mine will operate continuously for the next 40 years or
longer, depending on market requirements for steel and continued
economic recovery of coal . The Mine Plan Map (Map 3) shows the areas
which are currently disturbed by the surface facilities of the Maxwell
Mine. Additional minor surface disturbances for the term of the permit
are not anticipated. During the remaining life of the operation, those
disturbances required for ventilation and escapeway shafts are not shown
due to current planning which has not progressed and is not required
until the continued operation and development of the mine progresses for
approximately 6 to 7 years. When additional shafts required for
ventilation and safe operating practices are required, CF&I Steel
2.05-5
