Revised 11/15/81
Backfilling and Grading
The backfilling and grading plan which CF&I Steel Corporation plans to
follow consists of generally rounding and shaping the surface area which
is disturbed at the Maxwell Mine to blend in with the existing
topography. Particular care will be taken to make sure that areas which
have been compacted during their use at the Maxwell Mine will be ripped
or otherwise loosened to promote growth of vegetation. The final
contour which is anticipated after backfilling and grading have been
completed, is shown on the Post-Mining Topography Map (Map 15) .
Particular care will be taken to ensure that erosion prone steep slopes
or long continuous slopes will be avoided where possible. Backfilling
and grading of the coal processing waste areas is not anticipated other
than to ensure proper drainage from these structures.
Topsoil Redistribution
Topsoil material , as shown on the Soils Map (Map 10) , has been removed
where possible prior to disturbance of the surface area at the Maxwell
Mine. Table 14, Topsoil Mass Balance, shows the amount of material and
anticipated schedule of redistribution during the final reclamation of
the Maxwell Mine. Soil material will be removed from the stockpiles
with front end loaders and trucks or wheel scrapers and will be placed
on the regraded surface in a controlled fashion to ensure that all
available stockpiled soil material will be placed on those areas which
have been disturbed. Prior to placement of the topsoil material , the
previously compacted areas, such as roads, will be ripped and otherwise
loosened to ensure that the soil bonds with the regraded surface.
Soil material will be spread evenly over the regraded surface. Actual
grading and placement of the soil material will be completed along the
contour to minimize erosion of the replaced soil . In areas where the
slopes are too steep to permit safe equipment operation along the
contour, the soil material will be placed in the most safe and erosion
2.05-30
