Box 311
Canon City, Colorado 81212
August 2, 1982
Mr. Jack Gillespie
District Geologist
CF&I Steel Corporation
Box 316
Pueblo, Colorado 81002
Dear Mr. Gillespie:
This is in response to the telephone conversation that we had on July 29th.
The BLM conducted unsuitability inventories in the Raton Coal Basin in
1980. The area covered by the inventory was confined to the Federal coal
tracts located north of the Purgatorie River. We did not find any areas
that, in our opinion, qualified as alluvial valley floors. Although
alluvial-colluvial deposits occur in the bottoms of some canyons, we did
not find any irrigated land, or land that we felt was potentially irrigable,
overlying the Federal coal. Aside from the mainstem of the Purgatorie
and its three main tributaries (south, north and middle forks) , I doubt
if there are any significant alluvial valley floors in the Raton Coal Basin.
Sincerely yours,
4 A
District Hydrologist
LL
MINING r_:FPTnT"mFNT
