Willow and Wood's rose will be added to the basic mix for riparian. Willow will be
planted on 5 foot centers adjacent to the Middle Fork. Wood's rose will be planted at a
rate of 2 lbs PLS/acre.
True mountain mahonany, Common snowberry, Oakbrush sumac, Ponderosa pine,
Pinon pine and Juniper will be added for wildlife habitat. Planting and/or seeding of these
species will be selective based on final landscape design.
Roads
All roads including light use, access and haul roads will be reclaimed at the New Elk
Mine. Reclamation of roads will proceed when access is no longer needed for
maintenance of reclaimed areas. Roadbase will be removed and placed over refuse. The
roads will be ripped to a depth of 6 to 18 inches and scarified prior to final seedbed
preparation. Fill and cut slopes will be graded to blend with the post-mining topography.
Water bars will be installed as necessary to prevent excessive erosion. The two (2)
present crossings at the New Elk Mine will be removed when access is no longer required
to the south side of the Purgatoire River.
Revegetation Evaluation
Evaluation of revegetation efforts shall begin the year initial seeding takes place.
Evaluation of seeded areas shall be on annual basis. An annual revegetation success
evaluation will be submitted to the Division on or before January 30 of each successive
year.
Permanent transects will be established in seeded areas. Transects will be 50m to
100m in length. WFC proposes to utilize the point frame method to evaluate cover and
diversity. The point frame will be placed at 5m or 10m intervals. A total of 100 points
will be evaluated per transect. To determine sample adequacy WFC will utilize a 0.10
precision level and Z value of 1.64 for grassland and 1.28 for shrub communities.
-8-
