6.1.2 The Contractor shall use only earth materials previously excavated <br /> from the embankment and stockpiled and/or other sources designat- <br /> ed by the Engineer. <br /> 6.2 ZONE 1 FILL <br /> 6.2.1 Material for the Zone 1 fill shall consist of clayey sands, silty sands, <br /> and/or sandy clays (SC, SM, CL or combination) as defined by the <br /> Unified Soil Classification. Zone 1 material shall be free from <br /> organics and deleterious materials. <br /> 6.2.2 Zone 1 materials shall be obtained from the segregated stockpile of <br /> Zone 1 excavation materials and/or other sources as approved by <br /> the Engineer. <br /> 6.2.3 The Zone 1 fill gradation shall have at least thirty percent (30%) <br /> passing the No. 200 sieve and a plasticity index greater than 7. <br /> Occasional gravels no larger than six inches (6") in size and no <br /> greater than twenty percent (20%)by weight of material larger than <br /> two inches (2") will be allowed. <br /> 6.3 ZONE 2 FILL <br /> 6.3.1 Zone 2 materials shall be obtained from the segregated stockpile of <br /> Zone 2 excavation materials and/or other sources as approved by <br /> the Engineer. <br /> 6.3.2 Zone 2 fill material shall be identical to the Zone 1 fill except that <br /> stones larger than six inches (6") but less than twelve inches (12") <br /> will be allowed to a maximum of twenty percent (20%) by weight <br /> of material larger than two inches (2"); and up to fifty percent <br /> (50%) passing the No. 200 sieve will be allowed. <br /> 6.4 STRUCTURAL BACKFILL <br /> 6.4.1 Structural backfill shall be identical to the Zone 1 fill except that <br /> material larger than two inches (2") will not be allowed. <br /> SPEC.A- EARTHWORK <br /> PAGE 4 <br />
