OUTLET DESIGN
Hydraulics
The low-level outlet will be a conventional 24-inch diameter gated outlet capable
of releasing the annual peak inflow with 10 feet of operating head. Climax has maintained
records of runoff at various points around the property. Inspection of the records for the
period 1947 through 1992 shows a peak historic runoff rate of 0.0167 cfs per acre of
tributary basin. The mean annual peak runoff rate in the Climax area is somewhat less
than this value. Eagle Park Reservoir has a drainage basin of approximately 598 acres,
thus the peak inflow to the reservoir for this 46-year period would be 9.97 cfs.
The flow through the outlet with 10 feet of head will be about 24.5 cfs. Current
rules and regulations of the State Engineer' require that outlet works have the capacity
to pass the mean annual peak inflow and owners release requirements simultaneously with
a minimum head of 10 feet. The owners release requirements are not expected to exceed
8 cfs while mean annual inflow is estimated at less than 10 cfs. The flow through the
outlet with 10 feet of head will be about 24.5 cfs, exceeding capacity requirements.
The flow capacity of the outlet at the normal reservoir water surface elevation will
be about 45 cfs. Drawdown of the top five feet of the reservoir can occur at the rate of
over one foot per day (85.7 acre-feet per day discharging with 58.9 acres of surface area).
The 15" x 15" sluice gate will act as an orifice for flows above eight cfs (1 foot
head) and the outlet pipe will flow partially full for all head conditions. The discharge
equation for flows greater than eight cfs will be:
Q = Cd"Ao"(64.32"H)°-'
where: Q = Conduit Discharge Capacity (cfs)
Cd = Coefficient of Discharge (0.62)
A. = Area of Orifice Opening (1.56 square feet)
H = Reservoir Head (WS Elev. - 10,684.0 feet)
7
