3.1 Surface Water
Purgatoire River flow (Stations PRS-I, PRS-2 and PRS-3) ranged from 7.2 to 120
cfs. pH ranged from 6.3 to 8.0, conductivity ranged from 143 to 346 and temperature
ranged from 3.5 to 11.1oC. All data is consistent with previously reported data.
Mine discharge from the New Elk averaged 126,889 gpd (Table 3). The mine has not
operated during 1986. The New Elk Mine discharge remains good quality water. The
Golden Eagle Mine has been active since May. Average discharge from the Golden Eagle
has been 97,312 gpd. pH increases with mining activity. This is partially a result of rock
dust and partially inherent in roof and floor material. WFC has treated sediment ponds
002A and 002E with dilute hydrochloric acid on occasion to buffer pH.
Upstream Ciruela Canyon (CCS-1) did not discharge the first quarter 1986. Seepage
was occurring during the second quarter. There was no flow above the seep in the canyon.
Downstream Ciruela Canyon (CCS-2), as discussed in previous reports flowed in response
to Golden Eagle Mine discharge. Quarterly data is consistent with historical data.
3.2 Ground Water
Ground water data is reported in Appendix 2, Tables 2-1 through 2-8. No
parameters during this reporting period was significantly different from historical data,
except for elevated iron levels in PAW-6. The elevated iron levels are probably a result
of swell casing deterioration and insufficient casing volumes removed prior to sampling.
-13-
