Quality control of water analysis was performed by two methods. Prior to any field
sampling, the Hydro Lab Sampling Kit was calibrated to known standards produced in the
laboratory. A record of each calibration was kept as to the date, person performing the
calibration, and adjustments made. Core Laboratories, Inc. maintains internal quality
control of sample handling and instrumentation calibration.
Water quantity or flow measurements were conducted by a number of methods. At
the beginning of the program, a straight, flat, stable reach of each stream station was
selected as a sampling location. Near the downstream end of the reach, a cross-section
was surveyed perpendicular to the stream flow and permanently marked with stakes and
flagging. Flow was measured with a Teledyne-Gurley Model 625 Pygmy type current
meter using the USGS six-tenths-depth method. For the 1985 program on the Purgatoire
River station, staff gages were established on bridges above, between and below the two
mines providing data to calculate a stage-discharge curve for future discharge
measurements. These curves will be developed in 1986. At the mine discharge stations,
discharge was measured by the pump ratings or by a direct volumetric measurement with
a calibrated container.
2.2 Ground Water
Quarterly ground water samples were taken at each of the stations PAW-1, PAW-2,
PAW-3, PAW-4, PAW-5, PAW-6 and CCAW-1. PAW-6 was sampled for the discharge list
on a quarterly basis.
Depths to water below the top of the well casing was measured to the nearest
hundreth-foot using an electric line water level detector. The elevation at the top of the
well casing was subtracted from the depth to water to obtain the ground water level
below the ground surface.
3.0 MONITORING RESULTS
Surface water and ground water field parameters are summarized in Tables 1 and 2.
Appendices 1 and 2 contain all data collected for the first two quarters of 1986.
-12-
