CLIMAX MOLYBDENUM COMPANY COLORADO OPERATIONS
MinA Division of Cyprus Climax Metals Co Climax Hwy 91 91
Climax,Colorado 80429
 (719)486-215
e ^ / 9 77 Fax(719)486-2251
I j'' I /
September 25, 1996
Hand Delivered RECEIVED
Mr. Allen Sorenson P 2 51996
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Minerals and Geology '
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mr. Sorenson:
The attached information discusses the continuing implementation of environmental
protection measures associated with the tailing removal project in Eagle Park Reservoir.
To date, we have addressed the installation of 4-Dam Outlet or ks, t h6 installation of a
cut-off wall at the toe of Robinson Reservoir, and measures toward improved water
handling in Robinson Reservoir using a new impoundment at the toe of 1-Dam. Under
the Climax Mine Environmental Protection Plan, a final additional measure has been
considered and designed.
The 4-Dam Seepwater Return System is an Environmental Protection Facility in the
Eagle River Basin at the toe of 4-Dam. While Climax expects that tailing removal and
flushing of the foundation materials will occur over a period of several years, temporary
management of these waters is needed. Until water quality at the toe of 4-Dam meets
standards for the receiving stream, pumping of the containment system at the dam toe
will be provided to Robinson Reservoir. The attached dialog and design sheets are
herein submitted to the Division for review and acceptance as an Environmental
Protection Facility modification.
Climax would appreciate your review and input in as short a time frame as possible. I
would be happy to discuss details and considerations made in this modification to
facilitate your understanding of the protection measures it affords.
Sincerely,
Bryce R. Romig
Environmental Coordinator
Climax Mine
