for the previous five-year period. The water at both CCS stations is
a sodium-bicarbonate type resembling the discharge rather than
Purgatoire water.
Station SCF-1 is located in Santistevan Canyon approximately
one-half mile from the Purgatoire River. The stream was determined
to be perennial at the station as measured by the flume recorder.
Monitoring data collected is contained in Table 1-10 and 1-14 of
Appendix 1. Drainage area of the canyon is 2181 acres comprised
mostly of woodland. Portions of the canyon have been subdivided into
35 acre ranchettes. There are currently four houses and a lodge with
a swimming pool located in the upper drainage. These structures
utilize water from wells. Waste disposal is by means of septic
systems and drain fields which may supply additional water to the
drainage system. Three USGS springs have also been identified in the
canyon and appear out of fractures between sandstones and shales which
outcrop on the surface (Appendix 4) . A portion of the canyon is also
utilized as grazing land. Water monitoring was discontinued at this
station until longwall mining commences under the canyon. During
1989, a negative determination was made that the canyon does not meet
the alluvial valley floor criteria (see Exhibit 30 of the Golden Eagle
Permit Document) .
Station ACF-1 is located in Apache Canyon approximately one-half
mile from the Purgatoire River. Drainage area of the canyon is 7566
acres with cover comprised mostly of woodland. Grazing and wildlife
are the major land uses. Mining is also a land use with two shafts
and a power substation located in the canyon. The spring and seep
survey (Appendix 4) monitored two seeps and one USGS spring, none of
which were major contributions to stream flow. As with Santistevan
Canyon, water monitoring in Apache Canyon has been discontinued until
longwall mining commences under the canyon.
Surface water monitoring stations were added during the third
quarter of 1988 in Cherry Canyon (CHC-1) , Lopez Canyon (LCS-1) , and
-16-
