To finalize the plant materials lists; dominant or commonly occurring species identified in the regional
• vegetation baseline studies were evaluated for inclusion in the seed mixes or planting lists. The list of
these species was further refined to include the more desirable (e.g., no noxious or strong increaser
species) or high utility species. Realistic and consistent market availability was an additional selection
criterion considered for all potential species and varieties. Included species, which were not present in
vegetation baseline studies, were added to aid in achievement of the revegetation goals specified
earlier. Finally, analysis of revegetation monitoring data collected at the nearby Seneca 11 Mine since
1985 and review of pertinent revegetation literature was performed. The resulting information
provided insights into seeded species performance, seeding rates, stand composition, planting rates,
anticipated survival percentages, and the degree to which natural regeneration compliments the seed
mixes. Table 22 -1 lists the new taxonomic nomenclature (Weber, 1987 and Weber and Whittman,
1992) for species used in the mixes and planting lists. The old nomenclature and common names are
included for cross - reference.
TABLE 22-1
Revised and Old Taxonomic Nomenclature of Species
Listed in Seed Mixes and Planting Lists for the Yoast Mine
• Revised Nomenclature Old Nomenclature Common Name
Eb= s lanceolatusl
Agw=on dasystachyum
Thickspike wheatgrass
ELymus lanceolatus2
0 on rip um
Streambank wheatgrass
Elvin us trachycaulus trachycaulus
Aaop=n trachycalum
Slender wheatgrass
Pascogyrum s
Agw=o n smithii
Western wheatgrass
Pseudoroegneria spicata s icata
Agm=on s icatum
Bluebunch wheatgrass
Levmus ' ereus
Eb mus cinereus
Basin wildrye
Leymus triticoides
Elvmus triticoides
Creeping wildrye
Ceratochloa carinata
Bromus marginatus
Mountain brome
Festuca brach_ W ,hvlla coloradensis
Festuca ovina
Sheep fescue
Adenolinum Iew1S11
Linum lewisii
Blue flax
V' stet ascendens
Aster c ' ensis
Pacific aster
Pa us virginiana melanocaM
Prunus E gituana
Chokecherry
SvmnhoricaQos rotundifolius
Symmphorirarpos oreophilus
Snowberry
Serinhidium can um
Artemisia can
Silver sagebrush
Sedphidium tridentatum tridentatum
Artemisia tridentata
Big sagebrush
Scdphidium vaseya um
Artemis vasana
Mountain sagebrush
Krascheninnikovia lanata
Ceratoides lanata
Winterfat
NNc undo accroides violaceus
Acer nWmdo
Boxelder
1 (dasystaT hwml included in seed mixes to ensure specification of proper variety
- 2 ri arium included in seed nixes to ensure specification of proper variety
NOTE: The revised taxonomy follows Weber (1987)
and Weber and Wimnann (1992).
PR -02 9 Revised 01 /06
