operations, or in compacted non - topsoiled temporary reclamation. In addition, areas with excessive
• weeds or undesirable vegetation growth may be controlled by mechanical tillage using offset disking
on the contour. In shrub establishment areas, competing herbaceous vegetation may be controlled or
eliminated by contour disking operations prior to shrub seeding or planting. The shrub establishment
areas will be identified in the field and tillage will be conducted a sufficient number of times during
the growing season to control vegetation.
Controlling weeds or other competing vegetation in seeding or shrub planting areas may also be
carried out through the use of chemical herbicides. Large scale use of herbicides is not intended;
however, they have a high level of utility when controlling problem perennial weeds in permanent
revegetation areas requiring reseeding, or where elimination of competing vegetation in a shrub
establishment area is critical. Any herbicides used will be based on recommendations in the most
current Colorado Weed Control Guide issued by the Colorado State University Cooperative
Extension Service and as listed in the Seneca Coal Company Weed Management Plan Qanuary 2005).
The herbicides will be registered for the use intended and will be applied by certified applicators with
strict adherence to the label. An herbicide application program has been in -place at the Seneca II
• Mine and the program at the Yoast Mine will be closely patterned after it. Weed control and
herbicides are discussed later in this tab.
Seed Mixes and Planting Lists. Three seed mixes have been developed for permanent revegetation.
Complimenting the seed mixes used in permanent revegetation are lists of tree and shrub seedlings to
be used in concentrated planting areas on the mine permit area. A temporary stabilization mix and a
list of annual grains to be used for cover cropping complete the lists of plant materials to be used in
the various revegetation activities.
Initial considerations in the development of the permanent mixes and seedling lists included the
anticipated reclaimed area site conditions and the desired revegetation communities. Specific goals
used to develop the permanent seed mixes and seedling lists included rapid and long -term surface
stabilization, ease of establishment, maximum use of native species, adequate species diversity, high
levels of utility for livestock and wildlife, good forage production potential, compatibility with
naturally regenerating native species present in replaced topsoil, and the ability to be self - sustaining or
compliment successional processes in the reclaimed plant communities. Attainment of these goals, in
• tum, facilitates achievement of the postmining land uses.
PR -02 8 Revised 01/06
