November 14, 2012 C- 2009 - 087 /Peabody Sage Creek Mine JDM <br />trash rack and a rock lined emergency spillway. The discharge at the time of the inspection was approximately 1/4 <br />full through the 24" primary spillway. The pond embankments were stable and snow - covered at the time of the <br />inspection. <br />Upper Sump <br />Portal Area Sumps - The Portal Area Sump 41 and 42 are recently constructed non - discharging impoundments <br />that receive run -off from only the mine portal excavation area. Run -off is impounded in the 41 pond and then <br />flows to the 42 pond and is then pumped out.. The Portal Sump 42 contained water at the time of the inspection. <br />The Portal Sumps utilizes a 36 "corrugated steel pipe between the two sumps. These are incised sumps and do not <br />have constructed embankments. <br />Lower Sump - The Lower Sump impoundment is a recently constructed impoundment as part of the Peabody <br />Sage Creek Mine drainage and sediment control plan. The Lower Sump contained water at the time of the <br />inspection. The Lower Sump utilizes a corrugated steel pipe primary spillway with a 90 Degree Riser Pipe and a <br />trash rack and a rock lined emergency spillway. The pond embankments were stable and snow - covered at the time <br />of the inspection. <br />Pond 002 - Pond 002 is a permanent impoundment originally permitted under C- 1980 -005 and contained water at <br />the time of the inspection. Pond 002 utilizes a combination trapezoidal primary and emergency spillway. There <br />was water discharging at the time of the inspection. The water level gage on the flume was unreadable; however, <br />the mechanical meter was in place and functioning at the time of the inspection. No problems were noted. <br />Pond 003 - Pond 00' ) is a permanent impoundment originally permitted under C- 1980 -005; it was holding clear <br />water at the time of the inspection. Pond 003 utilizes an 18" corrugated pipe with a 6" extension primary spillway <br />and a rock lined emergency spillway. A trickle discharge was observed at the time of the inspection and the <br />spillway was functioning as permitted. The emergency spillway was stable with no problems noted at the time of <br />the inspection. <br />All permanent impoundments at the Peabody Sage Creek Mine were in compliance with Rule 4.05.9 at the time of <br />the inspection.
