A. Seepage from the Cirque Waste Rock Dump drains <br /> directly into the Open Pit. From there it <br /> drains into the Underground Mine where it is <br /> diluted with other mine water . The mine water <br /> is pumped to the surface and enters the <br /> industrial water system, where it is utilized in <br /> the milling process. All water not remaining in <br /> this system is treated prior to release. The <br /> Cirque seepage, before dilution, has not been <br /> analyzed due to the difficulty of obtaining <br /> samples. <br /> Water from the McNulty Waste Rock Dump area has <br /> historically been diverted into the industrial <br /> water system on an "as needed" basis. At <br /> present, the water can be so diverted, or it can <br /> be intercepted and bypassed around the system. <br /> With the growth of the waste rock dump, <br /> increased levels of various parameters appears <br /> to have occurred , particularly suspended and <br /> dissolved solids, nitrogen, sulfate , fluoride , <br /> aluminum, copper , iron and zinc. If necessary, <br /> we intend to divert this seepage directly into <br /> Climax' water management system for use , treat- <br /> ment and release . <br /> Seepage originating from the tailing ponds is <br /> managed so that it is used within the industrial <br /> water system, and eventually diverted to the <br /> water treatment plant for treatment and release . <br /> A system of subdrains promotes the collection of <br /> tailing pond seepage. Although we have data on <br /> the quality of this water , its characterization <br /> will change subsequent to the termination of <br /> operations . <br /> 4. Q. If treatment of water must occur during and <br /> after mining , where is the sludge disposed? <br /> A. The requested amendments do not propose any <br /> changes in our water treatment or sludge <br /> disposal practices. Treatment sludge is <br /> presently fixed and deposited on property <br /> upstream of the Mayflower Tailing Pond . <br /> Eventually, tailing will cover the sludge. The <br /> sludge has been tested in accordance with RCRA <br /> regulations and found to be non-hazardous . <br /> -6- <br />
