were stripped and stockpiled this year from the
Mayflower area. As indicated in our reclamation
plan , we estimate that 300, 000 cubic yards will
ultimately be stripped and stockpiled from this
area.
D. Disturbances - Section 6.
1. Q. Please clarify what is meant by no reclamation
on 400 acres in area #1.
A. Our use of the phrase "no reclamation" may have
been overbroad. Since the goal of reclamation
in this area is attainment of a talus slope and
cirque-like appearance, the wording should have
been "no revegetation."
E. Soils - Section 7 .2.
1. Q. Since both soil and vegetation evolve inter-
dependently, is an effort being made to
segregate various topsoil types for replacement
on similar areas for use by similar vegetation
types? If not, why?
A. To date , soil segregation has occurred only to
the extent that we maintain separate stockpiles
of subalpine and alpine Soils. Thus , during
stripping operations Histisols may be mixed with
adjacent soils whether they be Mollisols,
Alfisols or whatever . Nor are rocks usually
segregated . Many of our good soils are mixed
with poorer soils to extend the potential for
future coverage. Our long-range goals have been
to utilize these soils primarily on priority
sites , such as waste rock and tailing areas next
to the highway. We have adopted this approach
because of the shortage of good soil in the
area .
2. Q. Is all existing and usable topsoil currently
being salvaged for use in reclamation? Since
much of the area was disturbed prior to topsoil
salvage , has any thought been given to salvaging
usable subsoil for use in reclamation?
-4-
