technical revision. As our research
progresses , it is certain that technical
revisions will be requested .
Climax utilizes certain precautions to
enhance its reclamation success and to
protect the investment of manpower ,
materials and equipment. As examples ,
potentially unstable slopes are physically
stabilized ( such as with gabions) ,
out-planting of tubelings is undertaken
according to season and ground moisture,
plants are sheltered with shingles and
irrigated if necessary, and nettings or
mats are stapled to steep slopes to secure
seed and mulch. Our reclamation research
plots may suggest additional precautions .
14. Q. Please describe in detail the plans for grading ,
contouring and revegetation of haul roads on
level and steep terrain .
A. Cut and fill open pit haul roads will be
recontoured by plug dumping waste rock, dozer
pushing at the toe of the cut, and by dozing off
the fill crest ( drawing attached) . Approxi-
mately 10-15 ' of the back slope will be covered
by this method . The backfill will cover 40 feet
of road , and crest dozing will remove 20 feet of
road . This will leave 30 feet of access road
for powerline , surveying , and reclamation
access . Eighteen tons of backfill will be
required per linear foot of road. Upon
completion of the recontour ing , and when the
access road is no longer required, the remaining
30 feet of roadbed will be revegetated in place .
The recontouring procedure will be tested on a
section of haul road .
Revegetation will occur as described for haul
roads in the Reclamation Plan , Section 10.
15. Q. What are the selected high altitude shrubs
referred to?
A. The shrubs are those that will be proven for
reclamation at high altitudes through our
research program at Climax . Otherwise , they
-20-
