Climax ' s Proposed Spill Prevention Dam
and Arkansas Domestic Water Reservoir
November 18 , 1980
Page Two
2 ) Arkansas Domestic Water Reservoir
The purpose of the reservoir is to provide a safe ,
adequate and reliable domestic water supply for the 3 , 000
employees at the Climax Mine.
The construction of the reservoir would require
authorization by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers ( 404
Dredge and Fill Permit) with input from various agencies such
as Division of Wildlife, U. S. Fish and Wildlife, Environ-
mental Protection Agency, Department of Water Quality, and
the State archaeologist.
The daT would be 25 feet high, 610 feet long and require
22, 500 yds. of earth material excavated from the basin of
the reservoir . Approximately 85 acre feet of water would be
stored in the reservoir . A pipeline ( 9000 feet in length)
would gravity feed the water to the Climax water filter
plant.
Construction activities would commence with the strip-
ping of all topsoil . The topsoil would be stockpiled at an
elevation above the dam of at least 20 feet. For purposes of
final reclamation, Climax will commit to maintaining the dam
and the reservoir in conjunction with its water storage
rights remaining after cessation of mining operations .
pr
(, ti- 1980
