4.0 Site Description
4.10
perations Structures
CM -25 is a designated mining operation. Uranium and vanadium minerals will be mined
underground producing ore that will be temporarily stored on the surface while awaiting
transport to a processing facility. Waste rock will also be stored on the surface. At the present
time, the site has been reclaimed, including vegetation that has become well established. There
are no operational structures presently located at the site.
Once mining resumes, the waste rock stockpile will be the major feature of the site, extending to
the east from the portal area. This man -made feature will provide a working area that may
contain the site office, water tanks, and a future ore stockpile area. When mining resumes, it is
anticipated that additional storage facilities for compressors, generators, maintenance equipment,
and supplies, plus a 500- gallon diesel fuel tank with secondary containment, will be installed at
the site to support mining activities.
Clay soils from nearby will be placed on the waste rock pile, compacted, and used as a
temporary storage area for ore mined at the site. As mining continues, the waste rock pile will
expand in an eastern direction. The area below the waste rock stockpile will contain the runoff
retention pond for the site. Some excavation and embankment will be required to create this
pond, proposed in the lowest topographic area of the site.
The existing entrance road that connects to nearby county road EE 22 will be used as a haul road
to periodically transport ore from the mine.
4.2 Surrounding Area Characteristics
Vegetation
Most of the affected area at CM -25 is classified as a Pinon- Juniper (P -J) Woodland range. A
small portion consists of steep rock outcrops that support little or no vegetation. According to the
P -J range site description, this plant association generally occurs between 5,000 and 7,500 feet.
Precipitation ranges from 12 -15 inches per year, with an average annual temperature between 49
and 53 degrees F.
Secondary species associated with a P -J rangeland site include:
Indian ricegrass
Blue grama
Galleta
Cheatgrass
Fendler three awn
Rabbitbrush
Snakeweed
Fleabane
Mountain mahogany
Big sagebrush
Cliff rose
Sedges
ESWMP -2
