ITEM 1: HISTORY OF SPILLS
amz
No spills have occurred in the three years preceeding the
effective date of this permit at JD -7.
It is extremely unlikely that a spill from the JD -7 would impact
surface waters of the State. This assertion stems from the fact
that East Paradox Creek (an intermittent stream) is more than two
(2) miles from JD -7 and the Dolores River is yet another 4.5
miles removed from the site. With respect to whether any spills
at the JD -7 could impact ground waters of the State, the material
spilled would have to saturate the ground and begin to infiltrate
into and be absorbed by the soils formed from the Brushy Basin
Member of the Morrison Formation.' The Brushy Basin Member is a
variegated bentonitic mudstone containing interbedded sandstone
and conglomeratic sandstone lenses with the bentonitic mudstone
forming three - fourths of the member. Infiltration through the
soils and mudstone is slow, on the order of fractions of feet per
day. Because the Western Slope Operations Environmental
Technician makes three site visits per week , any spills would be
identified, and cleanup begun before the spilled material could
impact ground waters of the State.
' Beard, H.R., Nichols, I.L., and Seidel, D.C., Absorption
of Radium and Thorium from Wyoming and Utah Uranium Mill
Tailings Solutions, Bureau of Mines Report of
Investigations, 1979.
