K.1 Introduction
The description of the climate at the project site is based upon data compiled by the
National Climatic Center (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) for
Paradox and Grand Junction, Colorado and information presented in the West - Central
Colorado Coal Regional Environmental Impact Statement prepared by the U.S. Bureau of
Land Management.
The meteorological and climatic conditions in the vicinity of the JD -7 site are well
represented by the conditions observed at Paradox (elevation 5309 ft) and Grand Junction
(elevation 4843 ft), with slight variations expected at the project site due to differences in
elevation, vegetation and ground cover, and topographic orientation.
The discussion of climatic data in this section is presented primarily in the context of re-
vegetation.
A more complete review of the climate associated with the mine site is included in
Exhibit U — EPP.
K.2 Specific Climatic Factors
K.2.1 Temperature
The temperature data given in Table K.2 -1 are representative of the monthly variations
which can be expected at the JD -7 site. Although the trend generally indicates lower
average temperatures at higher elevations, temperatures may occasionally be colder in
valleys or basins (i.e., Paradox Valley) than at adjacent higher elevations surrounding
these lower areas.
