Coal Basin -- 2
Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. operators of the Coal Basin Mine
in Pitkin County filed bankruptcy in February of 1992. In August
of 1992 the Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Board revoked the mine
permit and ordered the company to continue reclamation 'activities.
The Board and Division of Minerals and Geology have been working on
a variety of options available through bankruptcy and the courts to
ensure that the site is reclaimed. Limited reclamation funds were
received by the state through bankruptcy proceedings in mid-July.
Implementation of the reclamation is being coordinated with
the U.S. Forest Service, Colorado Department of Health and
Environment, the Office of Surface Mining and local citizen groups.
The Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board was created in 1976
to carry out the mandates of the Colorado Surface Coal Mining
Reclamation Act. The Board works with the Division of Minerals and
Geology to enforce reclamation laws.
