Mid-Continent Resources, Inc.
PRODUCERS OF THE FAMOUS COAL BASIN COKING COAL
MID-CONTINENT RESOURCES,INC. 201 Centennial Street
625 PLAINFIELD ROAD-SUITE 220 Suite 406 Telephone:
WILLOWBROOK,ILLINOIS 60521 Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601 (303)945-4958
June 14, 1989
James C. Stevens
Senior Reclamation Specialist
Mined Land Reclamation Division
215 Centennial Bldg.
1313 Sherman St.
Denver, CO 80203-2273
Dear Mr. Stevens:
RE: Minor Revision Request. Tunnel Waste Disposal Pile
Mid-Continent requests a minor revision for purposes of clarification as to maintenance
procedures to be observed in placement of pond cleanings on the tunnel waste
disposal pile. These include grading to allow for adequate drainage and to prevent
surface depressions in the interface between the pile and the adjacent hillside.
Minor Revision 8, approved March 15, 1988, approved placement of pond cleanings on
the Rock Tunnel Pile. Our submission at that time did not specifically discuss the
maintenance of the temporary slopes and the placement of the pond cleanings.
Mid-Continent notes that in construction of the pile, there is a distinction made between
the final slopes, which have been built at 2(H):1(V) and compacted, as opposed to the
temporary slopes, where on-going activity makes such construction procedures
impractical. The pond cleanings are placed on the top of the pile, where a level area is
maintained. In this area, pond material is deposited in an incised pit. The shape of the
pit is necessary to prevent uncontrolled flow of material cleaned from the pond.
This Minor Revision request should be placed in the permit application at Vol. 2,
Appendix II-B-3, as page 171.
Yours truly,
Diane Delaney
Mid-Continent Res.
