Waldron
Reclamation Specialist
Division of Minerals & Geology
1313 Sherman St.
Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Minor Revision (#42) Request.
Dear Mr. Waldron:
Mid-Continent requests a minor revision (#42) to allow us to re-direct Coal Creek away
from the toe of the embankment at the outer edge of the lower yard area at Mine #5.
We could then proceed to buttress the embankment with rock, spread topsoil and seed.
At some time in the last several years the creek was re-channeled, over to the toe of
the embankment. We propose to remove the rock material blocking off the former
stream channel, placing it as a plug in the current channel. This would then re-direct
the stream to the former channel and away from the embankment.
A small stream of water flows along the west side the the yard area. It carries a minor
flow from a spring. We anticipate directing water from the lower portal to this small
stream when the portal is re-sealed. Presently, the flows of this stream enter Coal
Creek at an area near the embankment which we are seeking to protect. For that
reason, we would propose to re-direct the flows to enter Coal Creek somewhat higher
up the channel. This would entail removing some dead timber, and some minor
excavation with the backhoe to clear a small channel for a distance of approximately
10-15'. It appears that the stream had previously entered Coal Creek at the point we
propose to re-establish. Please see Map#1, which indicates the area on which work is
proposed.
Rock for armoring the toe of the embankment would be derived from several sources,
including some rock debris in the immediate area of th work, on the north side of the
