Ru/e 1. Permits
Furbearers/Predators
Black beazs also occurwithin the property. The CDOW has identified the entire property as black bear
overall range and fall concentration range. The definition ofoverall range is the sanie as for elk and deer.
Fall concentration ranges are those azeas that aze occupied from August 15 through September 30 for the
purpose of ingesting lazge quantities of mast and berries to establish fat reserves for the winter hibernation
period. The stands of Gamble's oak and serviceberry provide the nut and berry species needed for beazs
to survive the winter denning period and for the production ofyoung. Two bears were observed in Bonita
Canyon during the breeding bird surveys. Also beaz sign was observed throughout the property.
Mountain lions are also known to occur within the property. Although no lions were directly observed,
tracks were identified on the road between Puertecito and Alamosa Canyons in February 1996.
Coyotes were observed throughout the property. One coyote was observed during the aerial surveys in
Cow Canyon. In addition, tracks and scat were observed throughout the area and coyotes were heard
vocalizing in Cow Canyon during the breeding bird surveys.
Other furbearers/predators observed or potentially occumng within the property include bobcats, badgers,
fox, beaver, striped skunk, raccoon, and long-tailed weasel. Beavers were restricted to riparian habitats
at the upper portion of Lorencito Creek within Lorencito Canyon. In addition, the CDOW has identified
• beaver overall range on the Purgatotie River on the northern boundazy of the property.
The general lackofobservationsofspeciesfromtheseotherwildlifegroupswasnotunexpected. These
species are considered minor components ofthe wildlife resource in the property because suitable habitat
for species such as waterfowl and shorebirds was limited. For example, little open water is present in the
property. Consequently, habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds was very limited. Also, most predators are
secretive by nature and are most active at night. Therefore, these species are difficult to observe.
Aquatic Resources
The analysis area for the aquatic resources was determined to be waters within the property, including
proposed permit area and the potentially affected portions ofthe Purgatoire River (including a control station
upstream of potential influence). Refer to the surface water resources map (Map 2.04.7-1) for the analysis
area and station Locations.
• InrtnciioPml~PA1T(i]5)Iu1y3001xyd 2.04-57 (revised 07/25/01)
~R-o ~
