However, the CDOW has identified a golden eagle nest site near the confluence ofChimney and Lorencito
Canyons. The nest was not relocated during the field surveys and, therefore, it is not known if the nest was
active duringthe 1996 breeding season. But eagles were not observed in this azea during any ofthe field
surveys.
Other Birds
The CDO W has indicated that 119 other bird species may occur within the property based on potential
habitat. Of this total, 39 were observed during 1996 breeding bird counts. Transects conducted during
May were used to evaluate the use ofthe coniferous forest, mixed coniferous forest, grassland, oak/pinyon,
and mountain shrub habitat types occurring within the property during the breeding season.
Species diversity varied widely among the five habitat types. With 39 species observed during the surveys,
the ponderosa pine type had the highest diversity with 20 species observed. The coniferous forest type had
the fewest with three species detected. At least 20,16, 9, and 12 species occurred in the coniferous forest,
grassland, mountain shrub, and oak pinyon types, respectively.
Densities of birds within each habitat type (all species) varied from 0.8 birds/acre to 76 birds/acre.
Generally, the coniferous forest and oak-pinyon had higherdensities. This trend is not unexpected because
bird species diversity, and hence overall bird densities, usually increase with vertical habitat structure.
• Other Wildlife Groups
Several species that were not the object of specific surveys were observed within the property. These
observations include reptiles, amphibians, and predators. However, these observations were very limited.
Reptiles and Amphibians
The CDOW has indicated that 23 reptile and amphibian species may potentially occur within the general
property based on potential habitat. These species include: Woodhouse's toad, bullsnake, prairie
rattlesnake, short-horned lizard, wandering garter snake, and northern eazless lizard. However, only
Woodhouse's toad, prairie rattlesnake, sagebrush lizards, and short-homed lizards were observed within
the property. Woodhouse's toads were observed on the Lorencito Canyon road during the auditory raptor
surveys. in addition, one prairie rattlesnake was observed on the Chimney Canyon road during the May
pellet group counts. The remaining two species were observed on the southern portion of the property.
• LorcrcnoPmi.PA1T(a)5)/uly1001 ypd 2.04-56 (revised 07/25/01)
PR-o-
