- 31 -
LABORATORY TESTING
Samples obtained from our exploratory test pits were examined and
classified in the laboratory by the project soil engineer. Laboratory
testing was performed on the samples obtained to determine their index
properties and engineering properties. Samples of crushed low -grade
ore from the JD-5 lease were provided to us by Hazen Research, Inc.
The drainability of this low -grade ore was studied by a series of
tests. The results of the laboratory testing are shown on the Summary
of Laboratory Test Results, Table I, and on Figs. 11 through 21, and a
discussion of the laboratory testing is presented below. The testing
was conducted in general accordance with accepted test procedures of
the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) and U.S. Bureau of
Reclamation (USBR).
Index Properties: In order to identify soils and classify them into
categories of similar engineering properties, standard classification
methods have been developed. The Unified Soil Classification System
(ASTM D-2487) is a common method of identifying soils. The system is
based on index property tests, including the determination of natural
Iter content (ASTM D- 2216), liquid limits (ASTM D -423), plastic
nits (ASTM D -424) and grain size distribution curves (ASTM D -422).
hilts of the natural moisture content, dry density and Atterberg
units testing are presented on Table V. Grain size distribution
.curves for samples of the granular soils obtained at the site are
;shown on Figs. 13 through 15.
ineering Properties: A direct shear test (ASTM D -3080) was
'conducted on samples of the cohesive foundation materials encountered
