-30- <br />and subsurface disposal site will not lead to major adverse <br />environmental impacts. The potential for surface water and ground <br />water degradation is very low. The probablility of adversely <br />affecting valuable ground water resources is very low. <br />Plant Site: The plant site is located near the head of two shall <br />ephemeral drainages which seldom conduct surface runoff. It is <br />recommended that diversion facilities be provided around the plant <br />site. Periodic maintenance of the drainage facilities will be <br />required during the operating life of the plant. <br />The clay matrix in the landslide deposits and the claystone of <br />the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Bormation underlying the plant <br />site are relatively impervious, and it is unlikely that any spills or <br />leakages during plant operations will penetrate very far below the <br />surface. If spills were to occur, their retention and subsequent <br />cleanup should not present major problems. The plant operator should <br />have a contingency plan in the event of a spill. <br />Subsurface Disposal Site: Mining operations to date have not <br />encountered ground water. Exploratory holes in the area indicate that <br />ground water occurs in pervious sandstone lenses perched on top of <br />impermeable claystone and shale lenses. The majority of the perched <br />:•;er tables encountered in the exploratory holes lie at least 40 feet <br />low the present mine working level.
