Mr. Robert H. Hagen -2- November 14, 1933 <br /> It should also De noted that, upon completion of the rock tunnel project, <br /> no more coal will leave the mine mouth. Thus, mixing snow with waste <br /> rock will no longer be a problem. The rock tunnel project is anticipated <br /> to be completed in 1935. <br /> Item 2 <br /> The disturbed drainage culvert at Mine 41 has been repaired. A <br /> substantial headwa11 ,ihich should withstand the force of snow avalanches <br /> and incidental contact by bulldozers curing snow removal has been erected. <br /> The Division feels that the present configuration of the undisturbed <br /> drainage culvert is adequate. The existing culvert nas a concrete <br /> headwall and a sediment trap in front. To extend the calvert to the <br /> first of two minor drainage channels would require placing an elbow in <br /> the pipe. The extension would have a low gradient which coupled with the <br /> elbow could cause freezing problems. Also, the combination of <br /> eliminating the sediment trap and extending the culvert would decrease <br /> the available head wnile increasing the head requirement. Tnis could <br /> result in overtopping of the culvert and erosion of the roaa surface. No <br /> problems have been ooserved with this drainage culvert since it was <br /> installed in 1930 with the exception that a ne;r employee gracing the mine <br /> bench recently filled in the drainage ditch. Therefore, the 'Division <br /> finds this structure to be in compliance. <br /> Item 3 <br /> The diesel fuel tank enclosure at ;line =2 has bean repaired by patching <br /> the concrete wall . The enclosure will now function properly to contain a <br /> spill. <br /> A ditch has been built to direct any drainage from the iMine 72 oil shack <br /> to the sediment control drainage culvert southeast of the oil shack. <br /> Item 4 <br /> The access road to the coal refuse pile is on a north aspect. This area <br /> commonly is dry or frozen except during snowmelt season and occasionally <br /> during the fall when snow melts. <br /> The Division feels that no action on this problem is necessary for two <br /> reasons. First, the refuse disposal area is rapidly approaching <br /> capacity. Disposal of refuse in this area is anticipated to be completed <br /> during the summer of 1934. Therefore, this road will be no longer <br /> necessary and can be reclaimed. Second, the primary time when sediment <br /> laden water runs down this road into Coal Creek is during spring runoff. <br /> During spring runoff, undisturbed watersheds in Coal Basin frequently <br /> carry sediment loads in excess of 1 ,000 mg/l and occasionally approach <br /> 10,000 mg/l . During snowmelt, the contribution of suspended solids to <br /> Dutch Creek from this road is negligible. <br />
