- 2 - <br /> For light use roads , or reclaimed road surfaces , install waterbars <br /> to direct ditch and road surface drainage off site at frequent <br /> intervals . Such waterbars should not be utilized on unstable fills <br /> or poorly vegetated downslopes where excessive erosion would be <br /> like to occur. <br /> It is rec:mmended that certain road segments be selected for <br /> "demonstration proects" prior to full scale imolementation of the <br /> rolling dip/wateroar concept. This should be done this fall if <br /> possible , but would require agreement of USrS, MLRD, Operator, and <br /> OSM. <br /> Problem: Erosion on natural around below culvert outlet or ditch relief down <br /> drain ( see NCV C-91-016) : <br /> Contributing factors: <br /> - Excessive flow concentration <br /> Steep slopes , erosive soils <br /> Possible approaches : <br /> Ditch relief waterbars , additional culverts and/or rolling dips in <br /> appropriate locations . <br /> Construction of "keyed in" log check dam structures in series in <br /> gullies . <br /> In most- cases , offsite erosion is in steep , forested terrain where <br /> equipment access would necessitate significant additional <br /> disturbance . Thus , the recommended approach to stabilization of <br /> such gullies is to reduce the flow concentration, where possible, <br /> and install check dam structures in series within eroded segments <br /> to slow velocities and allow the gullies to silt in and stabilize. <br /> Such check structures would need to be constructed by hand using <br /> timber available on site . <br /> Problem: Drainage related erosion of road surfaces or =ill slooes (see <br /> NCV-C-31 -017) <br /> Contributing factors : <br /> - Excessive road surface width <br /> - Improper ditch and culvert maintenance <br /> - Lack of drainage ditch due to rock outcrop <br /> - Road surface outslooed , combined with no drainage ditch or <br /> improperly maintained drainage ditch. <br /> Possible Approaches : <br /> Road width should be appropriate for the intended use . If future <br /> use is light use only, earthwork necessary to reduce width, as <br /> aporopriate , should be performed with road surface sloped to the <br />
