Memo - J iin Stevens - 2 - November 5 , 1990
NOV C-90-051
The East Collection Ditch at the Sutey Pile is the 100-year diversion . It was
designed as a 1 .5' deep triangular ditch with riprap lining. I saw no
evidence of any riprap placement. Inspectors urged the operator to repair
this ditch during two inspections prior to the October 16, 1990 inspection .
There was one pile of rock nearby (about one front-end loader bucket full ) and
straw bales had been dropped in the 8' deep gullied section of the ditch (a
waste of good straw).
The ditch to Pona 5-1 had downcut in two sections :where water dropped off of
lumber that was laying in or on the ditch. I would estimate that this damage
had occurred during the past year or two.
All of the material eroded out of these ditches was carried into a sediment
pona.
NOV C-90-052
Several of the areas citea here would be ideal candidates for SAE 's in my
estimation. They are small and should generate minimal sediment. These areas
are:
1 . Topsoil behind district office;
2. Lumber storage by Dutch Creek;
3. South portal ;
4. Topsoil at 016 ponds.
Two areas would generate more sediment since they are either sparsely
vegetated or not vegetated at all . These areas are respectively, the rock
tunnel fill outslope and the southwest end of the No . 3 mine pad.
The berm around the upper sutey topsoil stockpile had been broken by the
operator during some clean-up work and left in disrepair. A small catchment
basin at the lower sutey topsoil pile had been allowed to fill and overflow,
depositing a delta of sediment outside the sediment control system for the
area.
/ern
1217F
