When the topsoil is used in reclaiming a disturbed
area, it will be distributed over the area in depths appropriate
to the type of material being covered.
Soil types, chemical characteristics, and salvage
depths (generally from 6 to 12 inches) are covered in detail in
Sections G. 3 & 4 . , Chapter III.
7 . Overburden
The handling of "overburden" related to the Coal Basin
underground mining operations will be limited to the rock materials
that will be generated by the construction of the two-bore rock
tunnel . No cover material above the underground workings will be
disturbed .
In constructing the 15, 000 foot long rock tunnel,
approximately 920, 000 cubic yards of rock spoil materials will be
removed and disposed of at a rock disposal site near the tunnel
portals (See Appendix II-B-5, Rock Tunnel Plan) . The rock spoil
disposal site has been inspected and approved by OSM and the
CMLRB .
Prior to commencing construction of the twin bore
tunnel, Mid-Continent conducted an environmental survey to
determine the best methods of disposing the rock spoil with the
least adverse environmental impacts . This survey included
studies of soils, hydrology, geology and vegetation conditions in
the area . Methods of collection and the results of the baseline
data collection efforts are covered in Appendix II-B-5 .
The tunnel project will disturb approximately 32 acres
of surface land . This includes the portal area (6 . 4 acres) ,
Jg
