Coal Basin seam located immediately north of the L . S . Wood Mine.
Principal access to the mine is via an inclined cross-measure
rock tunnel approximately 1, 100 ft . long . Other ventilation
openings and fan installations are located along the outcrop of
the coal seam.
The Coal Basin Mine is an old mine that was
originally opened in the late 1890' s and was operated into the
early 1900' s at which time it was closed and abandoned . Produc-
tion for this period was approximately 1, 000, 000 tons of coal .
The inclined rock tunnel access to the workings was part of the
original mine . In 1973 Mid-Continent Resources reopened the mine
and rehabilitated the main drifts to provide access to unmined
coal reserves lying west (downdip) of the old workings . Produc-
tion by Mid-Continent Resources through 1985 totaled approximately
1 , 000, 000 tons of clean coal .
The Coal Basin Mine was being developed with
a five heading main entry drift driven westerly along the southern
mine boundary. Production entries were driven to the northwest,
approximately 4, 000 ft . The present southern boundary of the
Coal Basin Mine is determined by the location of a large igneous
dike and a parallel and probably associated fault, both of which
run essentially east/west . The northern boundary of the mine is
determined by another major east/west trending fault . (See
Exhibit II-A-2)
All production at the Coal Basin Mine since
it was re-opened in 1973 has been done with continuous miner
section.
N
