Coal Basin is approximately <br /> 26 square miles in area with most of the Mine Plan Area and the <br /> coal reserves being located on the west flank of the basin. <br /> Also, included in the Mine Plan Area are coal reserves lying to <br /> the west and south of Huntsman ridge. Surface activities to the <br /> west of Huntsman Ridge within the Gunnison National Forest are <br /> expected to be minimal . Drilling of gas wells to inhance the <br /> methane gas drainage program, surface subsidence monitoring and <br /> possibly the establishment of a west portal of the Rock Tunnel <br /> together with a light use road system to support these activities <br /> are the only surface activities visualized at this time. <br /> The Mine Plan Area includes both patented (private) <br /> and U. S . Government Coal Resource Lands . Federal Coal Leases <br /> issued to U. S . Steel Corporation adjoin coal lands leased to <br /> Mid-Continent Resources along the southern boundary of the Mine <br /> Plan Area. A portion of the lands adjacent to the Mine Plan Area <br /> are owned or controlled by Mid-Continent Resources (See Exhibit <br /> The Mine Plan Area includes both the coal resource <br /> lands (lands underlain by coal) and adjacent non-coal resource <br /> lands . Coal producing operations are restricted to the coal <br /> resource areas generally westerly and southerly of the mine <br /> portals . Non coal lands easterly of the mine portals are needed <br /> for access, transportation, coal preparation and refuse disposal . <br /> Expansion of the underground operations will be generally westerly <br /> and southerly under Huntsman Ridge.
