(2) B Bed
The Dutch Creek #1 Mine, the L. S . Wood Mine
(#3) , the Bear Creek Mine (#4) , and the Coal Basin Mine (#5)
conduct mining operations in the B Bed . During the period of
1898 through 1908 the Colorado Fuel and Iron Coporation mined
approximately 1 million tons of coal from the B Bed at the Coal
Basin mine (#5) . The first coal production by Mid-Continent
Resources was begun in 1956, and through 1985 totaled approximately
15 million tons . Virtually all of the remaining reserves in the
B Bed will be mined at depths in excess of 2, 000 feet of cover .
The estimated recoverable reserve for the B Bed is at least 35
million tons of which it is estimated that from 500,000 to
1, 000, 000 tons will be mined each year .
Coal thicknesses in the B Bed vary from 531 to
10 feet. The coal in this seam is ranked as mid-volatile bituminous
and is very strongly coking .
(3) Middle Bed
Mining operations in the Middle Bed are
conducted from only the Dutch Creek #2 mine. Through 1985
production totaled 3 , 500, 000 tons .
The Middle Bed varies in thickness from 4 to
20 feet. Total recoverable reserves calculated for this seam
within the Mine Plan Area is 45 million tons of which it is
estimated that approximately 1, 000, 000 tons will be mined each
year .
The Middle Bed is ranked as mid to high
i
volatile bituminous and is also strongly coking.
