COAL BASIN MINE PERMIT APPLICATION
MID-CONTINENT RESOURCES , INC.
CARBONDALE, COLORADO
CHAPTER II
MINE OPERATION PLAN
A. Operations Plan - Estimated Area For Life of Operation
1 . Introduction
The underground coal mining operations and coal prepara-
tion facilities of Mid-Continent Resources , Inc . are located
about 6 miles west of Redstone, Colorado in Pitkin and Gunnison
Counties (Exhibit II-A-1) . The topographic basin, within which
the mines are located, is drained by Coal Creek and its tributaries .
The collective area of the several mines and preparation plant is
referred to locally as Coal Basin. Mid-Continent mining operations
have been continuous in Coal Basin since 1956.
There are five underground coal mines in the Basin.
The number of mines that are in operation at any one time is
dependent upon market conditions . Those not required to meet
production requirements are temporarily shut down and maintained
in a standby status . These mines are generally organized and
operated as one mine complex with five entries . When the rock
tunnel (described in Section II-B-3-c) is completed in 1986-87 ,
all coal from #1 and #2 mines will be brought to the surface
r through one bore of the tunnel . Future plans are for lateral
tunnels to connect the main tunnel to the other three mines .
