local schools, various public interest groups and State and Federal officials. An important part of
the tours was discussions of the weed control efforts and methods being undertaken at the site
under the auspices of the weed control grant. Additionally, discussion of the weed control effort
was included in the context of various public speaking engagements pertinent to reclamation at
Coal Basin.
Fall Sampling: Fall sampling of the treated areas was not undertaken in 1998. Although
originally contemplated, it was determined that sampling of the reference areas established in
June of 1998 would not occur until the Spring of 1999. This decision was made mainly due to
the lateness of the initial application, an early freeze and due to scheduling conflicts.
Visual inspection of the treated areas indicate that the control effort was initially successful. The
majority of targeted plants appeared dead. However, due to the application method, a certain
number of individuals were not treated. These plants will be identified and treated as a part of
the 1999 noxious weed control effort.
Financial
Slightly less than half of available resources were used during 1998. The total amount of cash
available prior to any work being initiated was $7,500. A total of$3,400 was spent during 1998,
leaving a cash balance of$4,100 available for additional work in 1999.
The total pre-work value of goods and services to be provided by the various partners was
$14,069. Of that amount, $6,226 was expended, leaving a balance of$7,843 available for use in
1999.
1999 Projected Work
Sampling of the treated areas will occur in the late Spring of 1999. Sampling of the reference
areas will be conducted following the protocols established at the site in 1998. Additionally, a
visual inspection of the area will be conducted in order to ascertain a relative degree of need for
additional treatment. It is anticipated that additional treatment will occur in early July, 1999. It
is also anticipated that follow-up sampling will be accomplished in the late Summer of 1999. A
final report will be issued following completion of all work.
The late summer field study will include a visual evaluation of the effectiveness of the
treatments, as well as quantitative sampling of the reference areas. A determination of future
treatment needs will be made following this effort. Public outreach in the form of site tours and
speaking opportunities will be pursued. As funds allow, a brochure or flier may be published and
locally distributed. Also, a paper may be presented at an appropriate professional forum. These
documents will describe the partnerships formed during the grant application process, pre-
treatment site conditions, application methodology, and treatment results in the context of weed
control being an integral part of successful reclamation at the Coal Basin Mine.
cAsgr\c1bsn\wdrpt98.wpd
