STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX:(303)832-8106
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
DATE: July 23, 1998
RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Governor
TO: Steve Renner James S Lochhead
Executive Director
FROM: Dan Mathews " Michael B.Long
Division Director
RE: Coal Basin Noxious Weed Sampling
Attached are vegetation data summaries from the noxious weed reference areas at Coal Basin,
sampled on June 16, 1998. Sampling was conducted by a crew from the OSM Denver office
(Barbara Bowerman, Becci Siegel, Randy Pair, Mitch Rollings), and me. We located and
marked four reference areas within disturbed areas at the mine which have become infested with
noxious weeds. Reference area corners were delineated with orange marked wooden stakes. The
infested areas will be subject to weed control efforts over the next few years. Repeated sampling
of these same reference areas over the next couple of years should provide a quantitative basis for
evaluating treatment success.
Reference Area 41 is a 50m x 35m area on relatively flat topography located immediately to the
west of the Sutey Refuse Pile, within the "V" formed by a ranch road and a pile access road
which diverge at that location. A systematic sample design was used for this and other reference
areas sampled. 10, 35 meter cover transects were run, with 5m spacing between transects. 2
cover readings were made at 1.5m intervals along each transect, using a tripod mounted ocular
point bar, giving a total of 46 cover points per transect. Live vegetation(current year's growth
on herbaceous vegetation) was recorded by species, along with litter, rock, and bare ground.
Thistle density was estimated by counting thistle plants within a 1x35m belt along one side of
each transect. No attempt was made to differentiate between the various thistle species for the
density estimate.
Reference Area#2 is a 50m x 25m area on the steep west facing slope of the Sutey Pile, near the
southwest corner of the pile. 10, 25 meter cover transects were run, with 5 meter spacing
between transects. Two cover readings were made at 1 in intervals along the transect, for a total
of 50 cover points per transect. Density of thistle species (lumped), and houndstongue
(Cynoglossum off cinale) was estimated for the south '/z of the reference area, by counting
individual plants within 1x25m quadrats along one side of each of the 5 transects within the
south half of the reference area.
Reference Area# 3 is located along the relatively flat surface of a segment of the conveyor
