Box 309 Carbondale, Colorado 81623 RE: Noxious Weed Grant, Coal Basin Mine Dear Mr. Riordan: I wanted to take a moment to summarize our conversation of November 20, 1997, and to further update you on the noxious weed grant proposal at Coal Basin. Minerals and Geology and Pitkin County are preparing a grant request for the purpose of controlling noxious weeds at the Coal Basin Mine. Large stands of thistle are present in a number of areas throughout the lower portion of the Mine area. These infested areas are located within or immediately adjacent to National Forest properties. Due to the size of these infestations, we feel that the threat of an invasion of the species onto reclaimed lands is great. It is possible that without taking steps to control these populations that the success of the revegetation efforts which have been undertaken will be hampered. Our general plan is to treat the weeds over a two year period, monitor success of the project for one or two years, and treat again as necessary. During preparation of the grant, we are actively enlisting the support of other interested parties, including land users, citizen groups, and land management agencies. We would appreciate a letter of support from the Sopris District to be included in our grant application. Please send the original letter to me for inclusion in the grant application. In order to meet our deadlines, I will need the letter by December 2, 1997.
