5TATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY P

Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX: 303)832-8106 L"
March 21, 1997 DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
Kevin Reardon RESOURCES
White River National Forest
Roy Romer
Sopris Ranger District Governor
P.O. Box 309
James S.Lochhead
Carbondale, Colorado Executive Director
81623 Michael Long
Division Director
RE: Coal Basin/Americorps Project Proposal
Dear Kevin:
As we discussed this morning, The Division of Minerals and Geology
has submitted a project proposal to the Americorps program for the
purpose of accomplishing a watershed improvement project at the
Coal Basin Mine. This project will be accomplished completely on
lands administered by the Sopris Ranger District. The goal of the
project is to accomplish planting of approximately 14,600 trees and
shrubs. Trees will be p-anted on the mine benches, while trees and
shrubs will be planted below the mine bench outslopes. The
planting of the trees and shrubs will accomplish some of the
reclamation goals estab:_ished in the Coal Basin Mine reclamation
plan, and will serve to enhance the watershed characteristics of
the Basin. We have ,also proposed that the Americorps team
construct erosion control structures in existing gullies for the
purpose of stabilizing these features.
As I mentioned this morning, the Division would appreciate a letter
of support from the Sopris District addressed to Kevin Rumery,
Assistant Project Director of the National Civilian Community
Corps. A letter sent to Americorps at your earliest convenience
would be helpful, as ]' understand that the project selection
process will begin Apri:L 1, 1997. I am enclosing a copy of the
proposal cover letter and pertinent portions of the application.
Thank you for your support of this project. I will be in touch
with you in the near future to discuss camping arrangements and the
loan of tools for Americorps team members.
Sincerel
Stev-en G. Renner
Project Manger
CC: David Bucknam
Loretta Pineda
