A*NCCC STRUCTURE
All 50 states and US territories are served by the AmeriCorps*NCCC program. Four
permanent campuses are established; additional campuses may be added later.
At each campus, approximately(Perry Point Campus not withstanding)250 18-24 year
old Americans live in residence. The AmeriCorps*NCCC team is made up of 12-14 Corps
Members and an experienced Team Leader. The AmeriCorps*NCCC provides a van, gasoline,
basic tools and food.AmeriCorps*NCCC relies on project sponsors to supply materials,
specialized tools, orientation, training and technical supervision. Teams deploy from a campus in
the most cost-effective and logistically feasible manner. When teams must be based off-campus
for a project, the project sponsor works with the AmeriCorps*NCCC Regional Project Director
to arrange housing, logistics, and special equipment, such as camping gear, if needed.Teams can
camp.AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps Members work a minimum of an eight-hour day. Projects must
be team oriented.
WHO ARE THE AMERICORPS*NCCC CORPS MEMBERS?
Each team is composed of Corps Members with a wide educational background; one
may have a masters degree while another may not have finished high school. Roughly 50%of
the Corps Members have some college experience. All Corps Members have earned their place
on an AmeriCorps*NCCC team by demonstrating a desire to serve their community and develop
their own skills. Teams will not be deployed based on educational background. All teams are
socially diverse and are composed of roughly equal numbers of men and women.
AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps Members are inducted into the corps after a thorough selection
process which includes background and drug tests, a medical exam, evaluative essays, letters of
reference,an interview, and completion of a three-week Corps Training Institute.
AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps Members have a demonstrated history of service and their mission is
to build civic pride and responsibility through community service work on projects indentified
by the community.
WHO ARE THE AMERICORPS*NCCC TEAM LEADERS?
An AmeriCorps*NCCC Team Leader provides leadership to corps members through
direct supervision at a project site. A Team Leader supervises a team of 10- 14 Corps Members
and works in conjunction with the project sponsor to ensure the quality of the project. Team
Leaders undergo extensive training and are selected on the basis of leadership experience,
commitment to service and motivation to serve our communities. Sponsors have found Team
Leaders to be invaluable in the day to day management of Corps Members who work at the
projects.
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
When a team is assigned to a project, it brings with it addtional resources in the form of
support staff. In addition to the Asst. Regional Project Director(who was involved in the initial
development of the project) a project sponsor will also become familiar with a Unit Leader(who
supervises five teams, one of which is on the project). Should there be any questions or concerns
regarding the project, once the team has been assigned, the Unit Leader and the Team Leader can
be a valuable resource to make any necessary improvements.
3
