How will this project area be maintained. <br /> Success of the project will be monitored by the Division of Minerals and Geology. <br /> Additional planting or sediment control treatments will be performed by Division contractors <br /> if the need develops, and as funds allow. <br /> 7. Other agency, corporations, citizen or group support. <br /> The U.S. Forest Service has expressed interest in and support of the project. The District <br /> Ranger may be able to provide some level of support. Local citizens have historically been <br /> very interested in watershed improvement within Coal Basin. Groups such as the Redstone <br /> Caucus, Sopris Greens and the Crystal River Environmental Protection Association may be <br /> willing to provide volunteers and possibly other support services. Pitkin County has also <br /> been supportive of reclamation activities. <br /> 8. Educational Opportunities <br /> A number of educational opportunities will present themselves during completion of the <br /> project. Coal Basin has a long history of coal mining. The historic town site of Coal Basin <br /> is located near the project area. Local historians or other knowledgeable individuals may be <br /> available to provide a tour and overview of the area. Natural history educational <br /> opportunities are also available. Geologic conditions within Coal Basin are unique and prove <br /> to be interesting to many individuals. The concepts of mine site reclamation and watershed <br /> improvement through high-altitude revegetation efforts provide learning experiences, <br /> particularly for younger people in search of career opportunities. <br /> 9. Project Timing <br /> The project will need to be accomplished during September, 1997. In order that preparatory <br /> work is completed prior to the project beginning, the Division will need to receive project <br /> approval by March 1, 1997. The project will be completed on steep slopes at 10,000 feet <br /> elevation. Participants should be prepared for difficult conditions, and cool temperatures. <br />
