Section Two -- page 3
6. How will this project area be maintained.
Success of the project will be monitored by the Division of Minerals and Geology.
Additional planting or sediment control treatments will be performed by Division contractors
if the need develops, and as funds allow.
7. Other agency, corporations, citizen or group support.
The U.S. Forest Service has expressed interest in and support of the project. The District
Ranger may be able to provide some level of support. Local citizens have historically been
very interested in watershed improvement within Coal Basin. Groups such as the Redstone
Caucus, Sopris Greens and the Crystal River Environmental Protection Association may be
willing to provide volunteers and possibly other support services. Pitkin County has also
been supportive of reclamation activities.
8. Educational Opportunities
A number of educational opportunities will present themselves during completion of the
project. Coal Basin has a long history of coal mining. The historic town site of Coal Basin
is located near the project area. Local historians or other knowledgeable individuals may be
available to provide a tour and overview of the area. Natural history educational
opportunities are also available. Geologic conditions within Coal Basin are unique and prove
to be interesting to many individuals. The concepts of mine site reclamation and watershed
improvement through high-altitude revegetation efforts provide learning experiences,
particularly for younger people in search of career opportunities.
9. Project Timing
The project will need to be accomplished during September, 1997. In order that preparatory
work is completed prior to the project beginning, the Division will need to receive project
approval by March 1, 1997. The project will be completed on steep slopes at 10,000 feet
elevation. Participants should be prepared for difficult conditions, and cool temperatures.
