Section Two -- page 2
1985 Radiant Strip Mine Project -- Fremont County DMG reclaimed a 700 acre strip
mine in Fremont County. VOC coordinated a revegetation project for a 100 acre area in
which 200 volunteers planted 6,000 trees and shrubs. The area is open range land. Tree
and shrub transplant efforts were very successful with a survival rate in excess of 50%.
1987 Trinidad Lake Project - Las Animas County Coal waste banks near Trinidad Lake
were regraded, topsoiled and seeded. VOC coordinated a revegetation effort that involved
100 volunteers. The project was highly successful due to the cooperation from the Division
of Parks and many local groups. The area is well maintained.
1991 Chalk Creek Project - Chaffee County DMG consolidated tailing piles from two
abandoned mills to a centrally located site. The tailings piles were impacting Chalk Creek
and affecting water quality. More than 60,000 cubic yards of tailings and 15,000 cubic
yards of waste rock were consolidated. All tailings removal areas were graded, mulched
fertilized and seeded. VOC coordinated 160 volunteers in planting trees and shrubs on the
consolidated waste pile. The volunteers also transplanted wetland grasses and willows in a
constructed wetlands area and tailings removal area. The volunteer effort was a great
success --success of the revegetation effort is being monitored.
1994 Peru Creek Water Quality Improvement-- Summit County Two hundred volunteers
participated in an experimental demonstration project involving the construction of man-made
wetland "cells" filled with natural wetland microorganisms. The purpose of the project was
to reduce the heavy metal content of the water. Revegetation of areas around the mine site
was also completed. The success of this project has yet to be determined as liability issues
are yet to be solved by federal and state agencies.
4. Does your agency have control of the project site.
The Division of Minerals and Geology is responsible for reclamation of the mine site.
Revegetation of the mine bench outslopes is a component of the required reclamation. The
property is federally owned, and is managed by the United States Forest Service, White
River National Forest, Mount Sopris Ranger District. The District Ranger is very supportive
of the proposed VOC project.
5. Use and user
Post project land use for the portion of the mine which is managed by the Forest Service is
non-motorized recreational use, wildlife habitat and cattle grazing. The Forest Service
manages the project areas and surrounding land. It is expected that with the mine closed
down, Coal Basin will be extensively used for cross-county skiing and hiking using the 15
miles of reclaimed roadways. The old townsite of Coal Basin has ruins of a coal mining
camp.
